AUTHENTIC MOVEMENT

Authentic Movement is a profound and transformative practice, originally named “movement in depth” by Mary Starks Whitehouse. It draws its roots from dance, the analytical psychology of Carl Gustav Jung, dance-movement therapy, and mystical traditions. The practice is based on the relationship between a mover and a witness. It was later developed into the Discipline of Authentic Movement by Janet Adler.

At the heart of Authentic Movement lie three interconnected elements: the mover, the witness, and the relationship that emerges between them.
With eyes closed and attention directed inward, the mover follows the impulses of the body, noticing emotions, sensations, images, memories, or thoughts that may arise. Whatever emerges is welcomed within a safe and non-judgmental framework. The witness cultivates a quality of deep presence, directing their attention toward the mover while simultaneously observing their own inner landscape — their own thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations.

The lived experience of moving and witnessing may be expressed through various creative media such as, reflective writing, clay, collage, and painting. At other times, there may be a need for silence and rest. The experience is enriched through dialogue between witness and mover and is integrated into the group process.

Today, Authentic Movement nourishes creative human interaction and finds application across a wide range of fields: in the arts and education, in psychotherapy and clinical supervision, in spirituality and the cultivation of a deeper connection with the natural world, in social action, activism and the promotion of accessibility and inclusive integration within the broader social sphere.

The practice allows experiences inscribed in the body and the nervous system to emerge, be explored, and become conscious. It cultivates self-awareness, empathy, compassion, and emotional expression. As an experiential and relational practice, it supports the restoration of trust in our bodies, in others, and in our deeper connection to nature and the world around us (Payne, 2026).

MY JOURNEY

I have been studying and practicing Authentic Movement since 2002, with Eleni Levidi as my first teacher. In 2010, I completed the four-year training program “Authentic Movement and Therapeutic Process”.

Since 2016 I have been participating in a long-term practice group in Germany, which meets through intensive retreats under the guidance of Anke Teigeler and Lisa Tsetse (USA). I have also participated in a training seminar led by Julia Gombos (USA), focusing on trauma and energetic phenomena within the process of Authentic Movement.

I am currently engaged in ongoing professional training and practice (Discipline of Authentic Movement) with Uta Büchler and Anke Teigeler.

My approach continues to evolve through my clinical engagement in the fields of psychosomatic medicine and psychiatry, teaching students, cultivating mindfulness, my supervisory perspective, and my own personal therapeutic journey, which includes psychoanalytic and Jungian analysis.

Considering the connection between embodied therapeutic practices and the natural world to be of vital importance, I integrate nature-based interventions into my work, drawing inspiration from the natural environment both for the practice itself and for the participants.

Throughout my personal and professional journey, as well as periods of transition and change, Authentic Movement remains a steady practice of grounding for me-nurturing growth, resilience, and embodied wisdom. Through the practice, I have learned to meet life’s challenges and transformations with greater presence and trust.

“We entered the house of realization,
we witnessed the body..
The whirling skies, the many-layered earth,
the seventy-thousand veils,
we found in the body…
Truth is wherever you want it.
We find it all within the body.”
